마침내(?) 기다리고 기다리던 Matter 1.2 버전이 지난 10월 23일 공식 발표됐다

(스펙 문서들은 10월 18일에 개정이 완료됐다)

개인적으로 신규 버전을 기다렸던 이유는, 버전 1.2부터는 9종류의 새로운 기기 타입(Device Type)을 공식 지원한다는 점이다!! (DC 모터를 이용한 선풍기를 Matter 디바이스로 만들어보는 프로젝트를 진행중이었는데, 공식 지원이 안되다보니 애플 홈킷이나 구글 홈같은 플랫폼에서 제어를 할 수가 없었다 ㅠ)

• 냉장고(Refrigerators) – Beyond basic temperature control and monitoring, this device type is also applicable to other related devices like deep freezers and even wine and kimchi fridges.
• 에어컨(Room Air Conditioners) – While HVAC and thermostats were already part of Matter 1.0, stand alone Room Air Conditioners with temperature and fan mode control are now supported.
• 식기세척기(Dishwashers) – Basic functionality is included, like remote start and progress notifications. Dishwasher alarms are also supported, covering operational errors such as water supply and drain, temperature, and door lock errors.
• 세탁기(Laundry Washers) – Progress notifications, such as cycle completion, can be sent via Matter. Dryers will be supported in a future Matter release.
• 로봇청소기(Robotic Vacuums) – Beyond the basic features like remote start and progress notifications, there is support for key features like cleaning modes (dry vacuum vs wet mopping) and additional status details (brush status, error reporting, charging status).
• 연기 및 일산화탄소 감지기(Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms) – These alarms will support notifications and audio and visual alarm signaling. Additionally, there is support for alerts about battery status and end-of-life notifications. These alarms also support self-testing. Carbon monoxide alarms support concentration sensing, as an additional data point.
• 공기질 센서(Air Quality Sensors) –  Supported sensors can capture and report on: PM1, PM 2.5, PM 10, CO2, NO2, VOC, CO, Ozone, Radon, and Formaldehyde. Furthermore, the addition of the Air Quality Cluster enables Matter devices to provide AQI information based on the device’s location.
• 공기청정기(Air Purifiers) – Purifiers utilize the Air Quality Sensor device type to provide sensing information and also include functionality from other device types like Fans (required) and Thermostats (optional). Air purifiers also include consumable resource monitoring, enabling notifications on filter status (both HEPA and activated carbon filters are supported in 1.2).
• 선풍기/환풍기(Fans) –Matter 1.2 includes support for fans as a separate, certifiable device type. Fans now support movements like rock/oscillation and new modes like natural wind and sleep wind. Additional enhancements include the ability to change the airflow direction (forward and reverse) and step commands to change the speed of airflow.

거의 모든 종류의 스마트홈 기기들을 비로소 Matter 생태계에서 모두 구현할 수 있게 되었다 (로봇청소기까지 추가되다니... 과연 애플 홈킷과 구글 홈은 로봇 청소기 디바이스를 앱에 어떻게 구현할런지 궁금하다)

바야흐로 "스마트홈 = Matter" 공식이 True가 될 만반의 준비는 다 갖추어졌으며, 2024년은 Matter가 전세계 스마트홈 사용자들의 생활 구석구석에 스며들게 될 것으로 예상된다

※ 이미 삼성전자의 SmartThings와 LG전자의 ThinQ는 Matter 인증을 진즉에 받아놓은 상황

Matter의 출시 속도는 기존 업계 표준의 통상적인 기술 채택 라이프사이클을 앞섰습니다. 사용자가 Hub 하드웨어를 교체하는 데 수년이 걸리는 것과 비교해, Matter는 단지 소프트웨어 업데이트만을 통해 기존 스마트 홈 허브와 장치를 Matter 생태계에서 사용할 수 있습니다. 즉, 수억 가구가 Matter 기기를 사용할 수 있는 글로벌 시장이 형성되었습니다. Matter 지원 기기를 제공하는 유명한 혁신 기업들의 제품들이 일반 사용자들의 집과 스마트 기기에 설치될 것입니다.

2023년 4월 발표된 Matter 1.1에서의 점진적인 개선과 함께, 매년 2번 정식 버전 릴리즈를 수행하겠다는 계획을 전달했습니다. Matter 인증 제품은 무선 소프트웨어 업데이트(OTA)를 제공해야 한다는 요구 사항을 통해 디바이스 개선 사항들을 안정적으로 제공할 수 있는 메커니즘을 제공합니다.

Matter의 이번 가을 업데이트(1.2)는 단순히 새로운 장치 유형만을 제공하는데 그치지 않습니다. SDK와 테스트 도구, 인증 프로그램 등 Matter 스펙은 수백 명으로 구성된 스마트 홈 개발자 및 제품 전문가들의 적극적인 참여를 통해 계속하여 발전하고 있습니다. 그들의 기여와 노력은 Matter가 지속적으로 추진력을 얻고 소비자와 개발자를 위한 전반적인 경험이 시간이 지남에 따라 점진적으로 향상될 것임을 보여줍니다.

Matter 1.2 사양의 핵심 개선 사항은 다음과 같습니다. 
[Latch & Bolt Door Locks] – Enhancements for European markets that capture the common configuration of a combined latch and bolt lock unit.
[Device Appearance] – Added description of device appearance, so that devices can describe their color and finish. This will enable helpful representations of devices across clients.
[Device & Endpoint Composition] – Devices can now be hierarchically composed from complex endpoints allowing for accurate modeling of appliances, multi-unit switches, and multi-light fixtures.
[Semantic Tags] – Provide an interoperable way to describe the location and semantic functions of generic Matter clusters and endpoints to enable consistent rendering and application across the different clients. For example, semantic tags can be used to represent the location and function of each button on a multi-button remote control.
[Generic Descriptions of Device Operational States] – Expressing the different operational modes of a device in a generic way will make it easier to generate new device types in future revisions of Matter and ensure their basic support across various clients.

내부 개선 사항: Matter SDK 및 테스트 하네스(Harness)

[Matter 테스트 하네스의 향상] – 테스트 하네스는 사양과 해당 기능이 올바르게 구현되는지 확인하는 데 중요한 부분입니다. 테스트 하네스는 이제 오픈 소스를 통해 제공되므로 Matter 개발자가 더 쉽게 도구에 기여하고(더 나은 도구를 만들기 위해) 최신 버전(모든 기능과 버그 수정 포함)으로 작업할 수 있습니다.

시장 중심 기술로서 Matter 사양 릴리스에 포함되는 새로운 장치 유형, 기능 및 업데이트는 회원사가 여러 단계의 작성, 구현 및 테스트에 대한 헌신의 결과입니다. Matter 1.2를 출시하기 위해 CSA는 최근 이러한 새로운 장치 유형의 엔지니어들과 함께 사양 검증 이벤트를 완료했습니다. 회원사들의 이와 같은 투자는 브랜드와 생태계 제공업체가 이러한 새로운 장치 유형을 갖춘 제품을 시장에 출시하려는 실질적인 추진력을 보여줍니다.

2024년으로 달력을 돌리면 Matter는 스마트 홈, IoT 생태계, 소비자의 마음 속에 그 입지를 계속 확장할 것입니다. 기존 Matter 장치 유형을 채우고 Matter 1.2로 데뷔하는 새로운 Matter 장치 유형 중 첫 번째 제품이 되는 새로운 제품이 시장에 출시될 것입니다. Matter는 내년에 2년마다 출시되는 릴리스의 일환으로 두 가지 새로운 업데이트를 받게 될 것으로 예상합니다. 이를 통해 훨씬 더 많은 장치 유형이 추가되고 새로운 영역으로 확장될 것입니다.
